Castell Coch (above Tongwynlais) was rebuilt in the 1890s as a country retreat for the 3rd Marquis of Bute. It was was rebuilt on the foundations of the original medieval structure. Not much is known about the history of the original building, but experts believe that it began as an earth and timber mote castle: built sometime around the end of the 11th century. Building continued at the site until the 14th century - but sometime in the 15th Century - Castle Coch was ravaged by fire, and was rendered derelict. By the late 19th century, the remains of the castle belonged to the 3rd Marquis of Bute: who commissioned William Burgess to prepare plans for its restoration as a place of residence.
This romantic fairytale castle, near Cardiff, is the perfect subject for a winter scene. With its red stone architecture and magnificent drawbridge, it is easy to imagine knights on horseback galloping up to the castle in the depth of the winter.
